Let \(M\) be a path-connected closed oriented \(d\)-dimensional smooth manifold and let \(l\!k\) be a principal ideal domain. By the work of Chas and Sullivan, the homology of the free loop space \(LM = M^{S^1}\), \(H_{*+d}(LM;l\!k)\) is a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Here the author considers the case where \(M\) is the classifying space of a topological group \(G\) that is discrete or path connected. The main result is an isomorphism \[ H\!H^{-p}(S_*(G), S_*(G))\cong H\!H_{p+d}(S_*(G), S_*(G))\,. \] Menichi deduces a structure of Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra on \(H\!H^{*}(S_*(G), S_*(G))\). Recall now the \(\l\!k\)-linear isomorphism \[ H\!H_*(S_*(G), S_*(G)) \cong H_*(LM) \] defined by Burghelea-Fiedorowicz and Goodwillie. The combination of the above isomorphisms is a linear isomorphism \[ H_{*+d}(LM) \to H\!H^*(S_*(G), S_*(G)) \] that is expected to be an isomorphism of Gerstenhaber algebras. The text contains a nice synthesis of our knowledge on Hochschild homology and cohomology of \(G\) and \(BG\) and their relations with the the string homology of \(LM\).
