The fine abelian group gradings on the simple classical Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero are determined up to equivalence. The key point in this work is to assign an invariant to each fine grading on a simple associative algebra. If \(R=\sum_{g\in G}R_g\) is a group grading of the simple associative algebra \(R\), there is a central graded division algebra \(D=\sum_{g\in G}D_g\) and a graded right module \(V=\sum_{g\in G}V_g\) over \(D\) such that \(R\) is isomorphic as a \(G\)-graded algebra to the algebra of endomorphisms \(\text{End}_D(V)\) endowed with the grading over \(G\) induced by the one in \(V\). Thus the central graded division algebra is the first component of the invariant attached to the grading. Under further restrictions, the module \(V\) is provided with a nondegenerate sesquilinear form whose diagonalization give families of homogeneous elements which appear as the second components of the invariants. As the author mentions: equivalence classes of fine gradings are in bijection with suitable equivalence classes of the above mentioned pairs. This work includes the case of the algebra \(D_4\) (also investigated in the paper [\textit{C. Draper}, the reviewer and \textit{A. Viruel}, Forum Math. 22, No. 5, 863--877 (2010; Zbl 1229.17032)]. On the other hand there is a paper by \textit{Yu. A. Bahturin} and \textit{M. Kochetov} [J. Algebra 324, No. 11, 2971--2989 (2010; Zbl 1229.17031)] dealing with the classification of simple Lie algebras of classical type (excluded \(D_4\)) over fields of characteristic other than two (and in some case also other than three).
