An \(L^2(\mathbb R)\) function is called the Paley-Wiener function if its Fourier transform vanishes almost everywhere outside some finite interval. As an extension of the known result for real functions whose Fourier transform vanishes around the origin, it is shown in the paper that, on the one hand, a real Paley-Wiener function whose Fourier transform is ``smoother'' at the origin than elsewhere has many sign changes, and, on the other hand, if the Fourier transform of such a function is ``less smooth'' in a neighborhood of the origin than elsewhere, then this function cannot have too many real zeros.
