A brief indication is given of how arise elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations with memory by modelling of viscoelastic materials at first. The urgent need for adaptive solvers for these problems is pointed out. By employing the methodology of \textit{K. Eriksson} and \textit{C. Johnson} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 28, No. 1, 43-77 (1991; Zbl 0732.65093)] an a posteriori error estimate is given for a model two-point hereditary boundary value problem. The strengths and weakness of the analysis and estimate are discussed.
