Let \(S\) be a semigroup, and let \(R\) be an associative \(S\)-graded algebra over a commutative ring with unity. A class \(\mathcal R\) of algebras is called \(S\)-closed if \(\mathcal R\) contains each algebra \(R = \bigoplus_{s \in S} R_ s\), provided that all the algebras among the \(R_ s\) belong to \(\mathcal R\). The class of PI-algebras is \(S\)-closed if and only if \(S\) has a finite ideal chain \(\emptyset= S_ 0 \subseteq S_ 1 \subseteq \dots \subseteq S_ n = S\) such that each factor \(S_ i/ S_{i - 1}\) is either finite or nilpotent.
