A smooth, immersed two-dimensional surface \(\Sigma\) in some three-dimensional ambient space is called a Willmore surface if it is a critical point of the Willmore energy \(W(\Sigma)= \int_\Sigma H^2 dA\). In the paper surfaces in three-dimensional Minkowski space \(\mathbb R^{2,1}\) are considered. Certain existence and uniqueness theorems for time-like Willmore surfaces were proved, i.e. for immersions with \(\text{det\,}g<0\) where \(g\) denotes the first fundamental form of the surface.
