This autobiographic article gives a fascinating account of the life of Mei-Chi Shaw. She was born 1955 in Taiwan as a child of immigrants from mainland China, and is now Professor of Mathematics at Notre Dame. Among other things, she describes her childhood in Taiwan, thus providing an insight into a world unknown to many readers, and her becoming a mathematician which starts with her graduate studies in Princeton, where she was the only woman in her class.
