This paper concerns the functional differential equation (*) \(\dot u(t)=f(u_ t)=Bu(t)+Lu_ t\) where f, an operator on a space \({\mathcal F}(- r,0;Y)\) into the Banach space Y, splits into two parts; one acting on u(t) and the other acting on the delayed part \(u_ t\). If f is linear and (*) is well-posed then a semigroup is defined on \({\mathcal F}(-r,0;Y)\), and the infinitesimal generator is well-defined with only mild extra assumptions. Then the Hille-Yosida Theorem is used to infer certain important implications of the well-posedness assumption about allowable f. These results have important implications when unbounded operators act on the delay part.
