Let R be a commutative ring with unity and S a commutative semigroup. Assume the semigroup ring R[S] has an identity. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for R[S] to be a principal ideal ring (P.I.R.). As applications, we characterize when R[S] is a Noetherian hereditary ring, and in case R is a field k, when k[S] is a general Z.P.I.-ring.
