Let \(C:F(X)\to A_\ast(X)\) be the homomorphism from the group of constructible functions on \(X\) to the Chow group of \(X\) constructed by \textit{R. D. MacPherson}, [Ann. Math. (2) 100, 423--432 (1974; Zbl 0311.14001)]. The Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a complex variety \(X\) is \(c_{\text{SM}}(X):=c(1_X)\). It satiesfies \(c_{\text{SM}}(X)=c(T_X)\cap[X]\) if \(X\) is smooth. The stringy Chern class \(c_{\text{Str}}(X)\) of \(X\) is defined to be the image \(c(\Phi_X)\) for a certain constructible function related to the resolution of singularities. It satisfies \(c_{\text{Str}}(X)=c_{\text{SM}}(X)\) if \(X\) is smooth and \(c_{\text{Str}(X)}=f_\ast c, c_{\text{Str}(X')}=f'_\ast c\) for some \(c\in A_\ast(Y)_Q\) if \(X\) and \(X'\) are \(K\)-equivalent and \[ \begin{matrix} f &{}_{\swarrow} X_{\searrow}& f'\\ Y && X' \end{matrix} \] is a common resolution. \(\Phi_X\) is defined using motivic integration. The definition of \(c_{\text{Str}}(X)\) is given for singularities occuring in the minimal model program. In case of quotients of manifolds by finite groups an explicit formula is proven in terms of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of the fixed point set data.
