This paper concerns eigenvalue problems (for matrices, polynomial matrices, and periodic matrix pairs) as well as multiparameter eigenvalue problems. It is shown that the quality of approximations of eigenvalues by Ostrowski's generalized Rayleigh quotients depends on the eigenvalue condition numbers defined by \textit{J. R. Rice} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 3, 287--310 (1966; Zbl 0143.37101)].
