Let \(\mu\) be the Riemannian measure of a non-compact connected Riemannian manifold \(\mathcal{M}=(M,g)\). Let \(\lambda(\Omega)\) be the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a non-empty open subset \(\Omega\) of \(M\). The Faber-Kahn inequality is a lower bound \(\lambda(\Omega)\geq\Lambda(\mu(\Omega))\) where \(\Lambda\) is a non-negative monotone decreasing function on \((0,\infty)\). If \(U\) is an open subset of \(M\), then \(\Lambda\) is said to be the Faber-Krahn function of \(U\) if the given inequality holds for all \(\Omega\) in \(U\). Note that the Faber-Kahn function of \(\mathbb{R}^n\) takes the form \(\Lambda(v)=c_nv^{-2/n}\). In Section 2 (cutting Faber-Kahn inequalities), the authors discuss how these inequalities and functions change under the removal of a compact set with smooth boundary. In Section 3 (Gluing FK functions), they discuss the change under gluing of several non-compact manifolds. In Section 4 (upper bound of the heat kernel), an application is presented which is concerned with the estimation of the heat kernel on a manifold with ends.
