Let \(K\) be a rational function field \(\mathbb F_q[T]\), where \(\mathbb F_q\) is the finite field with \(q\) elements. Then for \(K\)-analogues \(B_ n\) \((n=0,1,...)\) of Bernoulli numbers introduced by \textit{L. Carlitz} [Duke Math. J. 3, 503--517 (1937; Zbl 0017.19501); ibid. 7, 62--67 (1940; Zbl 0024.24410)] the author proves a series of new identities. As an application the vanishing (or cyclicity) of certain ideal class groups follows. The last results are founded on Okada's version of a Kummer-like theorem [see, e.g., \textit{D. Goss}, Number theory, Proc. Conf. Montreal/Can. 1985, CMS Conf. Proc. 7, 83--114 (1987; Zbl 0619.12009)].
