This paper studies (not necessarily linear) lattice homomorphisms acting between lattices of continuous functions defined on compact Hausdorff spaces. For example, given a lattice homomorphism \(T:C(Y)\rightarrow C(X)\), it is proved that there exist an open subset \(X_T\) of \(X\) and a continuous function \(\tau:X_T\rightarrow Y\) such that \(t(x,f(\tau(x))^-)\leq Tf(x)\leq t(x,f(\tau(x))^+)\), where \(t(x,c):= Tc(x)\). If \(T\) is bijective, then \(\tau\) is a homeomorphism, and the mappings \(\tau\) and \(t\) determine \(T\). As an application, new examples of compact spaces \(X\) for which the automorphisms of \(C(X)\) are automatically continuous, and a precise description of the automorphisms of \(L^\infty(\mu)\), \(\mu\) a standard measure, are obtained.
