The author considers a hyperbolic system of partial differential equations which models the flow of an inviscid gas with several thermal equilibrium modes. The fluid is considered in one space dimension and the equations are written in Lagrangian coordinates. If the initial data for the Cauchy problem are sufficiently close to the constant equilibrium state, the author shows the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to this problem. Based on the precise form of the fundamental solution to the linearized problem, the author also shows the asymptotic structure of the solution, both in time and space.
