For a given bounded operator \(T\) on a Banach space \(X\), the orbit of \(x \in X\) is the sequence \(\{T^nx\}_{n=1}^{\infty}\) of vectors and the weak orbit of \(x \in X\) and \(x^* \in X^*\) is the sequence \(\{\langle T^nx,x^*\rangle\}_{n=1}^{\infty}\) of real or complex numbers. This paper studies the existence of (weak) orbits tending to infinity, which provides an easy way to obtain a nondense orbit and therefore a nontrivial closed invariant subset. The main result states that if \(\{1 / \|T^n \|\}_{n=1}^{\infty} \in \ell^1\), i.e., \(\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} 1 / \|T^n \| < \infty\), then there exists a unit vector \(x \in X\) such that \(\|T^nx\| \to \infty\) and, for a complex Hilbert space \(X\), it is sufficient that \(\{1 / \|T^n \|\}_{n=1}^{\infty} \in \ell^2\). Analogous results for weak orbits are also presented.
