The paper extends a construction of \textit{H. Darmon} [Ann. Math. (2) 154, No. 3, 589--639 (2001; Zbl 1035.11027)] from the rationals to totally real number fields. Assume given a modular elliptic curve and a place of bad reduction it gives a Tate elliptic curve over the local field and a point in it. Over the rationals this elliptic curve is isogenous to the original one and this is conjectured in the generalization. Also the point should be defined over a suitable class field but this is open even over the rationals. The proof uses the well developed theory for the cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties (decomposition into Eisenstein, trivial, and cuspidal cohomology) and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence with a twisted version. The only arithmetic tool is Cherednik-Drinfeld uniformization.
