For a semidiscrete approximation of a simple hyperbolic advection equation non-reflecting boundary conditions are constructed. These boundary conditions are based on the Sommerfeld radiation conditions. It is shown that the boundary conditions obtained are optimal in some sense. Results for the Crank-Nicolson difference scheme are given too.
