A class of vertex models that are the natural generalization of Baxter's symmetric eight-vertex model is studied. It is shown that the completely \(Z_ N\) symmetric S-matrix introduced by Belavin obeys the Yang-Baxter equation. It is demonstrated that the curves on which there exist commuting transfer matrices are embedded elliptic curves. Explicit polynomial equations for these curves are given.
