It has been found that the system of discrete (finite difference) equations which approximates the Poisson equation on a region with irregular free boundaries may have complex eigenvalues. It is shown that their appearance reduces the convergence of the successive overrelaxation (SOR) method. So the discrete equations are reformulated in order to decrease the size of the complex eigenvalues. The modified SOR method is presented where two relaxation factors are used alternately that leeds to much faster convergence than can be obtained with optimum SOR.
