The no-return theorem of \textit{F. J. Tipler} [Essays in general relativity (Academic Press 1980; Zbl 0443.00020), pp. 21-37] is used to prove the following theorem: Let (M,g) be a non-spacelike convergent, generic space-time, with M compact. Then M admits no closed embedded edgeless spacelike hypersurface. This is taken as a reason for the dismissal of compact space-times as satisfactory models of the universe.
