Let \(F\) be a locally compact non-discrete non-archimedean field of residual characteristic \(p\). Langlands predicted the existence of a bijection between equivalence classes of irreducible degree \(n\) complex representations of the Weil group of \(F\) and equivalence classes of cuspidal irreducible representations of \(\text{GL}_n(F)\); a bijection having a number of good properties, especially preserving \(\epsilon\)-factors and twists by characters of \(F^{\times}\). In the present paper the authors establish the existence of such a (good) bijection when \(n\) is equal to \(p\); previously the cases \(n=2\) (Kutzko), \(n=3\) (Henniart), \(n\) prime-to-\(p\) (Howe-Moy) were known; the case \(n=p\) was also established independently by the reviewer. The idea is first to consider the case of irreducible degree \(p\) representations of the Weil group, which are induced from a character of the multiplicative group of a cyclic degree \(p\) extension of \(F\). In this case the necessary bijection has been established by the reviewer, based on results of \textit{D. Kazhdan} [Lect. Notes Math. 1041, 209--249 (1984; Zbl 0538.20014)]. Then one uses a theory of tame base change, analogous to that of Ph. Kutzko for \(n=2\); this theory uses a classification of cuspidal representations of \(\text{GL}_p(F)\) due to H. Carayol. Thanks to some recent results of J. Arthur and L. Clozel on base change theory, it is now possible to extend the results here to the existence of a bijection for any \(n\); however in this general case preservation of \(\varepsilon\)-factors remains to be proved.
