It is known that the Walsh-Paley system is not a Schauder basis in L 1[0,1]. Moreover, there exists a function in the (dyadic) Hardy space H 1[0,1], the partial sums of which are not bounded in L 1[0,1]. In this article it is proved that some means of the L 1-norms of these partial sums can be convergent for all elements of H 1[0,1]. I.e. if \(S_ k(f)\) denotes the kth partial sum of \(f\in H\) 1[0,1] with respect to the Walsh- Paley system, then \[ \lim_{n\to \infty}(\log n)^{- 1}\sum^{n}_{k=1}k^{-1} \| S_ k(f)\|_ 1==f\|_ 1. \] The trigonometric analogue of this statement was proved by \textit{B. Smith} [Lect. Notes Math. 995, 169-173 (1983; Zbl 0527.42004)]. The sharpness of the theorem is also investigated.
