Franz Ulrich Aepinus (1742-1802) war mit Euler eng verbunden. Der hier besprochene Aufsatz über den binomischen Lehrsatz (1760) ist ein Vorläufer von Eulers Beweisversuchen (ab 1774) und ist ebenfalls im Geiste der ``algebraischen Analysis'' unter Verwendung von Funktionalgleichungen gehalten. Das Streben nach Strenge ist deutlich. Allerdings werden implizite Annahmen (Existenz, Eindeutigkeit der Entwicklung) gemacht, und die Klasse der Funktionen wird, wie zu der Zeit Eulers, ohne weiteres auf die Polynome unendlichen Grades beschränkt. Der Aufsatz gibt Anlaß zu allgemeinen Überlegungen zur ``Strenge''.
