The authors continue an investigation of \(\alpha^*\)-compactness of the fuzzy unit interval \({\mathbb{I}}(L)\), initiated by \textit{T. E. Gantner, R. C. Steinlage} and \textit{R. H. Warren} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 62, 547-562 (1978; Zbl 0372.54001)]. It is shown that \({\mathbb{I}}(L)\) is \(\alpha^*\)-compact for any \(\alpha \nleq c_ L=\bigwedge \{\ell \vee \ell':\ell \in L\}\). The main result characterizes \(\alpha^*\)-compactness for \(\alpha \in L^+\), where \(L^+\subseteq L\) is defined as those \(\alpha\in L\) for which there exist collections \(B=\{\beta_ i:\) \(i\in {\mathcal I},\beta_ i\in L^ 0\), \(\bigvee_{i\in {\mathcal I}}\beta_ i=\alpha \}\) and \(A=\{\alpha_ i:\) \(i\in {\mathcal I}\), \(\alpha_ i\vee (\bigvee_{j\neq i}\alpha_ j\ngeq \beta_ i\}\). Here \(L^ 0=\{\beta \in L:\forall \ell \in L\) either \(\ell \geq \beta\) or \(\ell '\geq \beta \}\). It is also shown that in \({\mathbb{I}}(L)\) there are no non-trivial crisp open sets.
