Two new oscillation criteria are given for general second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations of the form \(x''(t)+a(t)f[x(t)]=0\), where \(a\in C([t_ 0,\infty))\), \(f\in C(\mathbb{R})\) with \(yf(y)>0\) for \(y\neq 0\), and \(f\) is continuously differentiable on \(\mathbb{R}-\{0\}\) with \(f'(y)\geq 0\) for all \(y\neq 0\). One of these criteria is concerned with the case where the equation is strongly sublinear while the other one deals with the case where the equation is strongly superlinear. Both criteria involve the average behavior of the integral of the alternating coefficient \(a\).
