    Let \(D\) denote the unit disk of the complex plane \(\mathbb{C}\), \(D\) the unit circle, and \(d\sigma\) the normalized Lebesgue arc length measure on \(D\). For \(1\leq p<\infty\) \(H^ p\) denotes the Hardy space consisting of analytic functions on \(D\) with finite \(p\)-norm. For \(f\in H^ p\), the \(p\)-norm \(\| f\|_ p\) is defined by \(\| f\|_ p^ p=\sup_{0\leq r<1} \int_{\partial D} | f(r\theta)|^ p d\sigma(\theta)=\int_{\partial D} | f|^ p d\sigma\). If \(\varphi: D\to D\) is holomorphic, then the composition operator \(C_ \varphi\) is defined by \(C_ \varphi(f)=f \circ \varphi\). The set \(\{f\): \(fC_ \varphi(H^ 2)\subseteq H^ 2\}\), where \(C_ \varphi\): \(H^ 2\to H^ 2\), is denoted by \(M(\varphi)\). The main results stated in this paper include conclusions involving the space \(M(\varphi)\). In particular, properties of \(M(\varphi)\) are indicated to include: Proposition 10. If \(2<p<\infty\), then there is a mapping \(\varphi\) such that \(M(\varphi)=H^ p\); Proposition 14. If \(b\neq 0\) is the \(H^ \infty\), then \(bH^ 2\subseteq M(\varphi)\) if and only if \(| b(z)|\leq c(1-| \varphi(z)|^ 2)^{1\over 2}\), and Proposition 18. The compositon operator \(C_ \varphi :H^ 2\to H^ 2\) is Fredholm if and only if \(\varphi\) is a conformal automorphism. The conclusion of Proposition 18 is attributed to [\textit{J. A. Cima}, \textit{J. Thompson} and \textit{W. Wogen}, Indiana Univ. Math. J. 24, 215-220 (1974; Zbl 0284.47026)].
