The authors deal with the study of operators on white noise functionals; they define a \(W\)-transform of such an operator and then they obtain a corresponding characterization theorem in terms of these transforms. This theorem is applied to give a simple proof of Obata's analytic characterization theorem for operator symbols [see \textit{N. Obata}, ``White noise calculus and Fock space'', Lect. Notes Math. 1577 (1994; Zbl 0814.60058)]. A criterion for the convergence of operators on white noise functionals in terms of their \(W\)-transforms is also presented.
