The authors derive from first principles an SIR model in which the class \(R\) of ``recovered'' individuals is subdivided into two classes, those infected who survive and become immune and those who die. Both the deterministic and stochastic models are analyzed and shown to exhibit a threshold phenomenon. Both models also predict the intuitive result that a higher probability of death due to the disease (as opposed to survival and immunity) results in a damaging epidemic.
