By using the idea given in [\textit{B.-Y. Chen}, Arch. Math. 60, 568-578 (1993; Zbl 0811.53060)], we establish in this paper a general inequality for arbitrary submanifolds in complex space forms. The inequality provides a new relationship between the intrinsic invariant \(\delta_M\) and the simplest extrinsic invariant, namely the squared mean curvature, for the submanifolds. Our new inequality generalizes the sharp inequality for totally real submanifolds given in [\textit{B.-Y. Chen, F. Dillen, L. Verstraelen} and \textit{L. Vrancken}, Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A 126, 153-165 (1996; Zbl 0855.53011)]. By applying this general inequality we establish further sharp new inequalities for real hypersurfaces in non-flat complex space forms. In this paper we also obtain two classification theorems for real hypersurfaces which verify the equalities.
