The paper demonstrates that and how the tools of the so-called geometric scattering theory can be applied to a concrete physical problem of general relativity theory: the behaviour of scalar waves with harmonic time dependence in the gravitational field of a Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. In particular, the distribution of the resonances, i.e. of the (complex) poles of the resolvent to the Laplacian of the problem, is discussed.
