This work is an attempt to model delaminated layered composite plates using a fracture mechanics approach. The theoretical background of the authors approach is presented. After setting the problem, it is shown how to obtain the derivatives of the mechanical energy using the so-called \(\mathbf\theta\)-method, \textit{~Ph.Destuynder and M.~Djaoua} [Sur une interprétation mathématique de l'intégrale de Rice en théorie de la rupture fragile. Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 3, 70-87 (1981)]. The numerical approximations of the plate equations and of the kinematics of the delamination front are briefly described. The delamination force along the front is computed. When impact loading is involved, the delaminated plate model must prevent interpenetration of the delaminated areas. The resulting constrained optimization problem is solved using an interior point algorithm proposed by Herskovits, \textit{E.~R.~Panier, A.~L.~Tits and J.~N.~Herskovits} [A QP-free globally convergent, locally superconvergent algorithm for inequality constrained optimization. SIAM J. Cont. Opt. 26, 788-811 (1988)]. It is applied to the study of a delaminated plate submitted to a static indentation.
