Some times ago in a very nice paper, \textit{M. F. Atiyah} and \textit{R. Bott} [Philos. Trans. R. Soc. Lond., Ser. A 308, 523-615 (1983; Zbl 0509.14014)], proved that the curvature of a connection on a bundle over a surface can be viewed as the momentum corresponding to the action of the gauge group. In the paper under review the author develops some similar ideas in the framework of diffeomorphism groups. Moreover, a lot of applications are nicely pointed out.
