The continuous wavelet transform induced by \(\psi \in L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)\) and a subgroup \(D\) of \(GL(n, \mathbb{R})\) is defined by \[ W_\psi (f) (a,b) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} f(y) \overline{\psi (a^{-1}y - b)} \frac{dy}{\sqrt{| \det(a)| }}, \] whenever \( f \in L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)\) and \((a,b)\in G\) - the semidirect product of \(D\) and \(\mathbb{R}^n\). \(D\) is referred to as the dilation group. A continuous wavelet associated with dilation group \(D\) is a function \(\psi\in L^2(\mathbb{R})\) such that \[ \forall f\in L^2(\mathbb{R}), \quad \int_G | W_\psi(f)(a,b)| ^2 d\mu(a) db = \| f\| _2^2, \] where \(\mu\) is a left Haar measure on \(D\). The main goal of the paper under review is to identify the conditions on dilation groups \(D\), which imply that there exist continuous wavelets associated with \(D\). The authors obtain an almost characterization result, which is stated in terms of stabilizers and modular functions. The \(\epsilon\)-stabilizer of \(x \in \mathbb{R}^n\) is the set \(D_x^\epsilon = \{ a\in D: | a(x) - x| \leq \epsilon \}\). \(D_x^0\) is referred to as the stabilizer of \(x\). The main result of the paper states that if a dilation group \(D\) admits a wavelet, then for a.e. \(x\in \mathbb{R}^n\), \(D_x^0\) is compact and \(\Delta \neq | \det | \). The result in the opposite direction uses the notion of \(\epsilon\)-stabilizers. The gap between the two statements remains an open problem.
