The authors study the rate of decay of correlations for tower systems (a special class of countable Markov dynamical systems) under rather weak assumptions that the corresponding Jacobian is of summable variation and the return time is only integrable. The main result is that the rate of decay of correlations can be estimated by the minimum of speeds allowed by the defect of smoothness if the statistics of return times are exponential, or by the statistics of return times if the Jacobian is Holder continuous.
