Given a bounded domain \(\Omega\) in the complex plane which has a smooth boundary, let \(L^ 2(\Omega)\) denote the Hilbert space of complex functions \(f\) on \(\Omega\) for which \(\| f\|_ 2=\bigl[\int_ \Omega| f(z)|^ 2dA(z)\bigr]^{{1\over2}}<+\infty\), where \(dA(z)={dx dy\over\pi}\) for \(z=x+iy\) is the normalized area measure on\(\Omega\). The Cauchy transform \(C\) on \(L^ 2(\Omega)\) is the operator defined by \((Cf)(z)=\int_ \Omega{f(w)\over z-w}dA(\omega)\) and is a compact opertor on \(L^ 2(\Omega)\). The authors study the singular numbers of \(C\) and of operators related to \(C\) such as \(CP\) and \(PCP\), where \(P\) is an orthogonal projection on \(L^ 2(\Omega)\). Among other things, they show that the singular numbers \(\{s_ n(C)\}^ \infty_{n=1}\) of \(C\) are asymptotically \(\left\{{1\over\sqrt n}\right\}^ \infty_{n=1}\) and that \(C\) is in the Schatten-von Neumann class \(S_ p\) for all \(p>2\), but is not a Hilbert- Schmidt operator. The paper is a follow-up to a preprint of a paper by Anderson, Khavinson, and Lomonosov from which many of the results follow directly.
