The author develops an eighth algebraic order exponentially fitted method for the numerical solution of the radial Schrödinger equation. Based on this method and on the sixth order exponentially fitted method presented by the author [J. Comput. Math. 14, No. 2, 120-134 (1996; Zbl 0847.65048)] a new variable-step method is obtained. The author applies the method to some test examples consisting of coupled differential equations arising from the Schrödinger equation and the numerical results indicates it superiority with respect to other classical and exponentially fitted methods.
