This paper presents two letters of Serre, the first one written to Tate in 1987 and the second one to Kazhdan in 1989. The first letter gives a sketch of a quaternion approach to modular forms modulo \(p\) (with the quaternions arising when evaluating ``modular forms'' at supersingular elliptic curves). In the second letter, modulo \(p\)-representations of adèle groups are used to show that the \(\text{mod }p\) theory is quite different from the theory over \(\mathbb{C}\).
