The quantum Hall effect is studied considering one-particle in a two- dimensional sample of infinite size with a random potential. By using the Thom isomorphisms for \(C^*\) crossed products and the Connes cyclic cohomology theory, the Hall conductivity is identified with a topological index which is obviously an integer. The main result of the paper is contained in the theorem formulated in the introduction.
