This paper studies among other topics: (1) uniform shape theory for precompact spaces by the inverse limit approach of Mardešić and Segal, and (2) relative Čech (co)homology groups for the remainder \(cX\setminus X\) of a precompact space \(X\). Here, \(cX\) denotes the compactification induced by the precompact uniformity on \(X\). Here are the main results and concepts: (1) a characterization for precompact shape of remainders; (2) an intrinsic characterization of Čech (co)homology groups of remainders; (3) border cohomological dimension and coefficient of border cyclicity are defined and studied. These results are too technical to be stated here, but they are easier to understand by starting with the two problems of Smirnov stated in this paper. Moreover, this paper provides references to earlier works by Ball, Calder, Keesling, Keesling and Sher, and Smirnov. Many other related references are provided.
