Under a condition involving the rate of decay of the curvature at infinity, it is proved that a complete simply connected negatively curved surface has a global isometric immersion in \(\mathbb{R}^3\). This gives a partial answer to the following question of \textit{S. T. Yau} [Semin. differential geometry, Ann. Math. Stud. 102, 669-706 (1982; Zbl 0479.53001)]: ``Find a sufficient condition for a complete negatively curved surface to be isometrically embedded in \(\mathbb{R}^3\)''.
