At present there exist a lot of tools to study the dynamical behaviour of piecewise monotone maps (containing the unimodal maps as a special case). Here the author presents tools from the theory of formal languages for studying piecewise monotonic maps on an interval in the dynamical setting. A necessary and sufficient condition for the languages are presented. The possibility of extension to a more general class of mappings is discussed.
