    Let \(\mathfrak{H}\) be a real or complex Hilbert space; \(A\) be a linear relation on \(\mathfrak{H}\) (i.e., a linear subspace of \(\mathfrak{H} \times \mathfrak{H}\)). A~linear relation \(A\) is called essentially self-adjoint provided its adjoint \(A^\star = \{\{f,f^\prime \} \in \mathfrak{H} \times \mathfrak{H} : \langle f^\prime ,h \rangle = \langle f,h^\prime \rangle\) for all \(\{h,h^\prime \} \in A \}\) coincides with its closure \(\overline{A}\). The authors describe some properties of essentially self-adjoint linear relations. In particular, they present criteria for a symmetric linear relation to be essentially self-adjoint, including certain range matrix-type characterizations.
