In this article, the authors have employed a fractional-order model for honeybee population dynamics that balances between simplicity and reality. The proposed adjoint state optimization approach allows one to find the unknown parameters in an accurate and robust way. It is done via solving a linear system of adjoint equations and minimizing a cost functional by using a gradient method. The numerical simulations approve the sound foundations of the approach. A possible continuation of the current work is to employ different fractional operators or more sophisticated models, e.g. [\textit{A. Z. Atanasov} et al., ``Parameter identification of colony collapse disorder in honeybees as a contagion'', CCIS 1341, 363--377 (2021; \url{doi:10.1007/978-3-030-68527-0_23})]. Nevertheless, the authors believe the current and future algorithms give insight into managing honeybee colonies and help solving contemporary ecological and environmental issues.
