The authors provide a general algorithmic approach to calculate the box dimension of Lorenz attractors. The algorithm behaves very well on self-similar fractals and fractal graphs of deterministic as well as random functions; however, in the case of the Lorenz attractor the algorithm seems to fail. The reason for this phenomenon is discussed, the notion of local box dimension is introduced, and the algorithm reveals a hidden multifractal structure of the Lorenz attractor.
