The authors propose and analyse a finite-difference discretisation of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functionals. The limiting behaviour of the finite-difference approximation is studied in a detailed form as the elliptic-approximation parameter \(\epsilon\) and discretisation step-size \(\delta\) simultaneously tend to zero. The finite-difference discretisation is analysed for the three subcritical, critical, and supercritical scaling regimes, and \(\Gamma\)-convergence results are presented.
