We closely follow the very clear and instructive introduction to the paper. Let \(p\) be a prime number. In earlier work, the authors (or rather, three out of four of them) had successfully computed the geometric \(p\)-adic étale cohomology of Drinfeld \(p\)-adic symmetric spaces in arbitrary dimension. The final result was analogous to the one in the case of \(\ell\)-adic étale cohomology with \(\ell\ne p\), which was known by the work of Schneider and Stuhler. The purpose of the present paper is to carry out similar computations of the \textit{compactly supported} \(p\)-torsion étale cohomology of more general \(p\)-adic period domains. The results are similar to the one for \(\ell\)-torsion, \(\ell\ne p\), cohomology with compact support obtained by Dat (for the Drinfeld spaces) and by Orlik (in general). While the arguments in the above-mentioned earlier work (in the Drinfeld case) were based on \(p\)-adic Hodge theory (via the syntomic method) and its integral versions, the present paper combines a beautiful geometric construction due to Orlik with a vanishing result for extensions between mod \(p\) representations of \(p\)-adic reductive groups.
