The paper is concerned with the method of quasi-interpolation by radial basis functions, a method that is applicable in any dimension of the ambient space, and, furthermore, in some cases it is the only feasible one. The paper extends and specifies some results obtained by the first named author in [J. Approximation Theory 72, No. 1, 103--130 (1993; Zbl 0820.41006)] and by \textit{M. D. Buhmann} et al. [Constr. Approx. 11, No. 2, 239--254 (1995; Zbl 0824.41010)]. In Section 3 one finds local approximations by Taylor polynomials of degree \(m\) in \(d\) real variables of functions \(f\in C^m(\mathbb R^d)\) (Theorems 3.1 and 3.2), while Section 4 is concerned with pointwise approximation by basis radial functions in weighted Sobolev spaces. Section 5 contains applications to optimal recovery and Section 6 (the last one) deals with simultaneous approximation and least squares.
