Let X be a Hilbert space and A a closed linear operator in X. Imposing suitable hypotheses on the resolvent of A, the author establishes existence and uniqueness results for the abstract linear differential equation (f a given function) \(u^ a_ t=Au^ a+f(t)\), \(t\in R\), in the Sobolev spaces \(H^ k_ a(R,X)\) with weight exp(at), where \(a\in R\), \(k\in N\). An a priori bound on \(u^ a\) in terms of f as well as an explicit formula for \(u^ a-u^ b\), a,b\(\in R\), involving the eigenvalues and eigenspaces of A are also given. It is the shown how this theory can be used to prove results for elliptic boundary value problems in cones and infinite cylinders obtained previusly by more classical methods.
