[Part IX, cf. Hardy-Ramanujan J. 14, 34-43 (1991; Zbl 0736.11046).] The Dirichlet series under consideration are of the form \(F(s)=1+\sum^ \infty_{n=2} a_ n n^{-s}\); the point is that the constant term does not vanish. The problem is to show that under suitable conditions there are ``many'' zeros of \(F(s)\) in regions of the form \(\sigma\geq 1/2- \delta\), \(T\leq t\leq 2T\), where \(\delta\) is small, say \(\delta=C \log\log T/\log T\). A concrete example of admissible functions \(F(s)\) is the Dirichlet polynomial \(\sum_{n\leq T^{1000}}\mu(n) n^{-s}\), where \(\mu(n)\) is the Möbius function.
